The Yurts
Traditionally used in Asia by Nomads these circular domed tents offer a beautiful, comfortable, Bohemian way to experience simple living close to nature. The ingenious use of basic materials tried and tested for centuries has created a roomy, warm and comfortable space to relax. There are three main types of yurt in use today – the two tiered yurt with pointed roof, the Mongolian Ger and the bentwood roof and crown. The yurts at Stephen Gelly are of the bentwood variety.
The yurts are situated on the edge of woods in their own small field overlooking the Camel Valley. They are pitched on elevated ground 30m apart. The yurts are simply furnished with a wood burning stove futons and gas hob and can each sleep four adults or a slightly larger family. Just bring your own bed linen/duvets otherwise each yurt is equipped with pretty much everything you will need for a comfortable stay. There is water and a wash up in the yurt field as well as a place to have an open fire. Nearby the yurts have their own shower and toilet facilities.
The farm is a working organic holding of 120 acres rearing cattle, sheep and chickens. We have horse livery, apple orchards and an apiary. We grow a lot of our own vegetables, make preserves and charcoal from the hedgerows, and harvest honey from the bees in autumn. The yurts are located at the centre of the farm offering a unique opportunity to experience and if you choose take part in the seasonal farm routine – being organic we try as much as possible to integrate all the different activities on the farm as harmoniously as possible – for a few weeks in the summer the yurts offer a fascinating window through which to experience and be a part of our organic farm. Three generations of Collinge live at Stephen Gelly and we are happy to share our knowledge of animal husbandry and living off the land gained in over forty years of farming. As Stephen Gelly is a working livestock farm unfortunately dogs are not allowed however well behaved.
The farm is located in the middle of Cornwall, an ideal place to explore all that the County has to offer: Lanhydrock (3miles), Eden Project (7 miles), Bodmin and Wenford Railway (2 miles), beaches (North Coast 12 miles, South Coast 10 miles). The location is also great for just being, watching the cathedral-like clouds drift in from the Atlantic or the stars arc overhead at night.
We only have two yurts, so if you book them both (discount available) you will have the facilities to yourselves. Get in touch for further information on price and availability.
